People are so quick to dismiss the importance of artists. Yes, this world needs all sorts of people: logical thinkers, inventors, engineers, etc – but we also need artists. I’m going to go out on a limb here and even say: “without artists there would be no beauty.” Or maybe the beauty would be there, but we wouldn’t be willing or able to recognize it.
For someone who hopes to support herself one day by being a writer, this is a disheartening situation. One minute artists are expected to give their art out for free – to turn around the next minute and be punished for not making a profit. Oh, there are artists who make lots of money, but there are so many people in this world who create art because it is their passion, their calling, and their way to leave something in this world. Art is priceless and undervalued at the same time. Why is that?
These are just a few thoughts that came to my mind after reading Talking with the taxman about poetry – and deductions by Jim Walsh. I hope you don’t mind my sharing them.
